据说，洪武三十年的一天，燕王朱棣做了一个梦：太祖皇帝朱元璋赐他一个象征着权力的大圭，大圭上携着“传之子孙，永世其昌”八个大字。正当他半梦半醒、回味无穷之际，有人来报皇孙朱瞻基降生了。朱棣心念一动，不久，明太祖去世，朱棣以“清军侧之恶”为名发动靖难，成为永乐皇帝，皇孙朱瞻基深受宠爱，其父朱高炽也因他被册立为皇太子。

洪熙元年五月，朱瞻基即位，改元宣德。他就是宣德皇帝，既是一个有较高文化素质的皇帝，又是一个生活充满情趣，热爱书画、喜欢射猎、斗促织和戏游无度的皇帝。他就是被后世誉为“太平天子”、“守成之君”的明宣宗，明朝“永宣盛世”的开创人。

据文献记载，宣德三年初，宣德皇帝得到了南方遢罗国（今泰国）刺加满霭进贡的几万斤风磨铜。这触动了他改善郊坛、太庙及内廷之鼎彝陈设的想法，于是决定用此铜铸炉。
